The Hermit

Symbols on the card

Inner wisdom that lights only the next few steps, which is enough.
The staff
Experience and patience that support the climb.
The summit
Perspective earned by stepping away.
The hooded cloak
Quiet humility; not needing to be seen.

The card's history

Marseille's L'Hermite holds a lantern and staff and is sometimes linked to Time itself. Waite placed him on a snowy summit and put a six-pointed star in his lantern: a light found alone and held up for others.

Upright meaning

Step back from the crowd and think. Time alone will show you the next step more clearly than more input.

Love Space within a relationship, or getting to know yourself before the next one.

Work Deep, focused work; research, study, or seeking a mentor's quiet advice.

Inner life Your own light is enough to walk by. Trust slow understanding.

Reversed meaning

Withdrawal may have become isolation. It might be time to come down the mountain and share what you found.

Love Shutting others out, or loneliness that is hard to admit.

Work Working alone too long; ask for feedback.

Inner life Notice if you are hiding from a conversation you need to have.

In a three-card spread

Questions to sit with

  • What would I hear if everything else went quiet?
  • Who could I share my light with?

A small practice

Take a twenty-minute walk without your phone and let one question walk with you.

In the Fool's journey

Tarot here is a mirror for reflection, not a prediction. The meanings follow the Waite-Smith tradition and the Golden Dawn attributions, in our own words.
