The card's history

The Marseille card is La Papesse, a seated woman with an open book, long linked to the legend of a female pope. Waite renamed her the High Priestess and set her between the temple pillars Boaz and Jachin, with the Tora half hidden in her lap.

Upright meaning

The answer is already in you, but it is quiet. Pause, observe and trust what you sense before you act.

Love Unspoken feelings matter here; give them time rather than forcing a conclusion.

Work Gather information quietly; not everything needs to be said yet.

Inner life Make room for silence. Journaling, rest and dreams may tell you more than advice.

Reversed meaning

A quiet signal is being drowned out. Something hidden asks to be looked at honestly.

Love Secrets or mixed signals; ask instead of guessing.

Work Decisions made on surface information; look for what is missing.

Inner life You may be overriding your intuition to please others or to stay busy.

Tarot and astrology

Her planet is the Moon: reflection, memory, the inner tides. Like the Moon, she shines with a light that is received and returned. Moon →

Questions to sit with

  • What do I already know but have not said to myself?
  • Where could I wait and listen a little longer?

A small practice

Before sleep, ask yourself one question and write down whatever comes on waking, without judging it.

In the Fool's journey

Tarot here is a mirror for reflection, not a prediction. The meanings follow the Waite-Smith tradition and the Golden Dawn attributions, in our own words.
