Symbols on the card

The turning wheel
Rise and fall, seasons and cycles.
The sphinx at the top
Calm understanding that stays steady while the rim spins.
The serpent and the jackal-headed figure
Descent and ascent: both are part of the turn.
The four winged creatures
The fixed signs and elements, stable around the change.

The card's history

The Marseille Wheel carries strange animal figures rising and falling around a crowned sphinx. Waite added the letters TARO and ROTA, the four winged creatures of Ezekiel and alchemical signs, making it a wheel of cycles rather than blind luck.

Upright meaning

A turning point is here. Meet change with openness; luck favours readiness.

Love A new chapter, or a meeting that feels well timed.

Work Momentum, a lucky opening, a season of growth.

Inner life Look at the bigger cycle: this moment is one turn, not the whole story.

Reversed meaning

You may be resisting a change that is already happening, or repeating an old pattern. Look for the lesson that keeps returning.

Love The same argument or the same kind of relationship again.

Work A setback or delay; adjust instead of forcing timing.

Inner life What is within your control in a turn you did not choose?

Questions to sit with

  • What cycle am I in, and where on the wheel do I stand?
  • Which pattern keeps coming back to teach me?

A small practice

Look back at the same month last year: what has turned, and what keeps returning?

In the Fool's journey

Tarot here is a mirror for reflection, not a prediction. The meanings follow the Waite-Smith tradition and the Golden Dawn attributions, in our own words.
