Death
Death is card XIII of the 22 major arcana of the tarot; in the Golden Dawn tradition it corresponds to Scorpio.

Death is the card of a chapter closing so another can begin. It speaks of transformation and release, never of physical death.
Symbols on the card
- The rider on a white horse
- Change that comes to everyone, equally.
- The black banner with a white rose
- Purity and new life inside the ending.
- The rising sun between two towers
- Renewal on the other side of the threshold.
- The figures who meet it
- Some resist, some accept: the change comes either way.
The card's history
In the Marseille deck card XIII usually has no name at all: a skeleton mows a field of heads and hands. Waite made Death a rider on a white horse carrying a banner with a white rose, a sun rising behind: transformation, not mortality.
Upright meaning
Something has run its course. Let it end cleanly to make room for what is next.
Love A relationship transforming, or the end of a pattern that no longer fits.
Work Closing a role or project; restructuring that clears the way.
Inner life Grieve what was, and notice the space that opens afterwards.
Reversed meaning
Holding on to what has ended makes change harder. Release can be done in small steps.
Love Staying in what is finished out of fear of the unknown.
Work Clinging to an old role or method that has stopped working.
Inner life Ask what you would make room for if you let this go.

Questions to sit with
- What in my life has already ended, even if I have not admitted it?
- What is trying to begin?
A small practice
Write a short goodbye letter to one habit or role you are ready to leave.
In the Fool's journey
Tarot here is a mirror for reflection, not a prediction. The meanings follow the Waite-Smith tradition and the Golden Dawn attributions, in our own words.
