The Devil
The Devil is card XV of the 22 major arcana of the tarot; in the Golden Dawn tradition it corresponds to Capricorn.

The Devil shows the chains we wear and forget we can lift. It names compulsion, fear and attachment so that you can see them clearly.
Symbols on the card
- The loose chains
- Bonds that could be lifted off with a little courage.
- The inverted torch
- Energy turned downward into compulsion.
- The horned figure
- Our own shadow, given a face so we can meet it.
- The two figures
- People who stay because they believe they cannot leave.
The card's history
The Marseille Devil is a winged, horned figure with two small chained imps at his feet. Waite echoed the Lovers card: the same man and woman, now with horns and tails, chained loosely enough to lift the chains off.
Upright meaning
Look honestly at what has a hold on you: a habit, fear, or attachment. Naming it is the first step to freedom.
Love Intense attraction, jealousy or dependence; notice what feels compulsive.
Work Feeling trapped by money, status or overwork.
Inner life Your shadow is not your enemy; it holds energy you can reclaim.
Reversed meaning
A chain is loosening. You are seeing a pattern clearly, and that makes change possible.
Love Leaving an unhealthy dynamic, or setting a firmer boundary.
Work Choosing freedom over a golden cage.
Inner life Celebrate small acts of release; they add up.

Questions to sit with
- What am I telling myself I cannot leave?
- What would one small step out of the chain be?
A small practice
For one day, notice each time you reach for a habit you want to change, without trying to stop it, just counting.
In the Fool's journey
Tarot here is a mirror for reflection, not a prediction. The meanings follow the Waite-Smith tradition and the Golden Dawn attributions, in our own words.
