The Hanged Man

The Hanged Man is card XII of the 22 major arcana of the tarot; in the Golden Dawn tradition it corresponds to Water (element).

The Hanged Man

The Hanged Man hangs still by choice, and sees the world upside down. When pushing does not work, a pause can reveal what you could not see standing up.

The card's history

The Marseille card, Le Pendu, shows a man hanging by one foot from a gallows, an old image of a traitor's shame punishment. Waite gave him a halo and a calm face and hung him from a living tree, turning punishment into chosen surrender and insight.

Upright meaning

Stop forcing. Let a situation rest and look at it from a completely different angle.

Love Patience, letting go of having to win, seeing the other's view.

Work A pause in a project that gives time to rethink the approach.

Inner life Surrender is not defeat; it can be the most active choice you make.

Reversed meaning

Waiting has become stalling, or a sacrifice no longer serves anyone. Decide to move.

Love Giving more and more without being met halfway.

Work Indecision or martyrdom at work; name what you need.

Inner life Ask what you are holding on to by staying stuck.

Questions to sit with

  • How does this look from the opposite side?
  • What could I stop pushing for a while?

A small practice

Choose a stuck situation and list three ways it looks if you assume the opposite of what you believe.
