78 ✦ A conversation with yourself
Five cards for one relationship: both sides, the space you create together, what strains it and where it tends. It works for partners, friends, family and colleagues alike.
The positions
- YouYou: how you show up in this relationship right now.
- The other personThe other person: how they show up in this situation as you experience them. Tarot does not read anyone's private thoughts.
- Between youBetween you: the connection itself, what the two of you create together.
- ChallengeThe challenge: what strains the relationship; a pattern, not a verdict on either of you.
- DirectionThe direction: where things tend if you both continue as you are.
When to use it
- a relationship you want to understand better
- tension with a partner, friend, family member or colleague
- a new connection you are unsure about
Questions to ask
- What do I need to understand about us right now?
- How can my sister and I talk more easily?
- What does this new friendship ask of me?
How to read it
Compare the first two cards: the same suit or element suggests a shared way of being; contrasting ones, different needs. Then read the third card as the space those two create.
Read the challenge as something in the relationship, not in one person, and the direction together with it: what changes if the challenge is met?
Questions and answers
- Can it tell me what they feel about me?
- No. The second card describes how the other person shows up in the situation as you experience them; no one's private feelings can be read from cards.
- Does it only work for romantic relationships?
- No. Friends, family and colleagues work the same way; name the person or the relationship in your question.
- What if the direction card looks hard?
- It shows the current course, not a fixed outcome. Read it with the challenge card: that is usually where things can change.
