78 ✦ A conversation with yourself
Five cards for a choice between two options: one card for where you stand, then two cards for each path, the option itself and where it tends to lead. The spread compares; the choice stays yours.
The positions
- Where you standWhere you stand: what you bring to the decision, and what is pushing you to make it now.
- Option AOption A: the first path as it is now, its appeal and its weight.
- Where A leadsWhere A leads: the tendency if you take the first path.
- Option BOption B: the second path as it is now.
- Where B leadsWhere B leads: the tendency if you take the second path.
When to use it
- deciding between two jobs, places, plans or offers
- "should I act or wait?" (A acting, B waiting)
- seeing what each choice would ask of you
Questions to ask
- Should I take the offer in Shanghai (A) or stay in my current team (B)?
- Study a master's degree now (A) or work for a year first (B)?
- Speak up about it (A) or let it go (B)?
How to read it
Read each path as a short story of two cards, then set the two stories side by side against the first card: which one answers what you actually brought to the question?
A reversed card on one path often marks what that path would ask you to work through, not a reason to avoid it.
Questions and answers
- Will the cards tell me which option to choose?
- No. They describe what each path holds and asks of you; weighing them is your decision.
- Do I have to name the two options?
- It helps a lot: write A and B in your question. Without names, A is read as acting and B as waiting.
- What if I have more than two options?
- Narrow it to the two you are most torn between, or draw the spread again for another pair.
