78 ✦ A conversation with yourself
Three cards for one concrete question: the situation as it is, what creates friction in it, and a step you could take. It is the spread to reach for when you are not sure which to use.
The positions
- SituationWhere you stand: the situation as it is now, including what you may not have put into words.
- ChallengeWhat creates friction: an obstacle, a habit or an outside pressure that the situation runs into.
- AdviceA next step: an attitude or action that answers the challenge.
When to use it
- most concrete questions about work, study, plans or feelings
- when you feel stuck and want one step forward
- a first spread when you are new to tarot
Questions to ask
- How can I move this project forward?
- What is really in the way of this conversation?
- What would help me settle into the new job?
How to read it
Read the challenge against the situation: what in where you stand meets this resistance? Then read the advice as an answer to the challenge, not to everything at once.
If the advice card seems to repeat the problem, it often asks you to work with that energy instead of against it.
Questions and answers
- How is this different from past, present, future?
- Past, present, future follows time; this spread follows a problem: where you are, what resists, what to do. Use it when you want a step rather than a story.
- Can I ask a yes-or-no question?
- It works better as an open question: "How can I…" or "What should I understand about…" gives all three cards something to answer.
- What if the three cards contradict each other?
- Tension between cards is part of the reading: the challenge is meant to push against the situation. Ask what each card would need from the others.
